ArchivalResource

Papers of John La Farge [manuscript], 1938-1939.

The collection centers around La Farge's drafting of "Humani Generis Unitis" for Pope Pius XI. This unissued encyclical condemned totalitarian states for dehumanization in general and anti-Semitism in particular. The final section was a renewed plea for Pius's Catholic Action movement. The collection contains correspondence, clippings, notes, an English draft, and a French outline and text of the encyclical. Of interest are accounts of an interview with Jan Garrigue Masaryk and with Pius XI, plus a short section in the encyclical condemning racial intolerance in North America.
